Into the 18 th Century

Marsh’s Library is the first public library in Ireland, opening its doors in Dublin in 1707 and as such is a vital part of Irish heritage and tourism. It is also a working research facility so it straddles both the academic and visitor attraction worlds. A cultural cornerstone in the capital deserved a website fitting of its importance.

Thorough research, including competitor analysis and user persona development, informed the design process. The website aims to attract tourists while also catering to researchers and scholars. By combining historical significance with a modern digital presence, Marsh's Library can continue to engage and inspire visitors.

The Process

Marsh's Library, a historic gem nestled in Dublin, required a website that could bridge the gap between its scholarly and cultural roles. The challenge was to create a digital space that would appeal to both researchers and casual visitors, while honouring the library's rich history. To achieve this, we designed a website that is both informative and visually captivating.

We incorporated vivid videos, striking photography, and creative illustrations to bring the library's unique character to life. By using innovative design techniques, we aimed to set Marsh's Library apart from traditional library websites.

The website is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, providing a seamless experience for visitors. It offers a glimpse into the library's history, its collections, and its ongoing activities. Whether you're a scholar seeking rare manuscripts or a curious visitor exploring Dublin's cultural heritage, the website provides a virtual window into this remarkable institution.

Research

To create a website that caters to the diverse user needs of researchers, scholars, and general visitors, we conducted in-depth user research. This involved understanding the different motivations and behaviours of each user group

Concept & Wireframes

A clear information architecture was developed to organise the website's content in a logical and intuitive way. This involved categorizing information and creating a site map that would guide users through the website. A content strategy was also developed to ensure that the content was engaging, informative, and relevant to the target audience.

Design & High Fidelity Prototype

The website was designed to reflect the library's historical significance and modern appeal. A visually appealing design, a user-friendly interface, and accessibility features were prioritised. The website was optimised for various screen sizes to ensure a seamless user experience.
